Santa Barbara packed the hearing: In a dramatic reversal the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to deny Sable Offshore Oil Company’s permit transfer, with longtime pro-oil Supervisor Steve Lavagnino breaking ranks after citing criminal charges, state fines, and ethical concerns about Sable’s leadership

The petition built visible momentum that helped pass AB 542 and set the stage for the next round of protections in 2026.
